How to Start a Clothing Brand in India? with ₹0 Ad Spend: 2026 Roadmap

Hi fellow entrepreneurs and business-minded people,

If you’ve ever thought about starting your own clothing brand, then this article is for you. Here, you’ll learn how to start a new fashion brand in India without spending ₹0.

Yes, you heard that right. But of course, you’ll need to do all those things yourself that I’m about to tell you in this article.

Who I am ?

Before that, let me introduce myself. My name is Abhishek Gupta founder of Onevision media. I’ve been in this entrepreneurship game for more than 10 years and have learned some hard lessons along my journey that I want to share with fellow entrepreneurs, so they don’t have to waste time and money learning the skills and things that I learned the hard way.

If I had to start a Fashion Brand from 0, here’s what I’d do

This wouldn’t have worked 3–4 years ago, In 2026, the game has completely flipped for Indian D2C fashion. Paid acquisition is getting brutal According to Growww Tech’s 2026 Indian D2C benchmark, average Meta CAC increased 32% year-on-year, from ₹380 to ₹502, while average Google Search and Shopping CAC stood at approximately ₹650 in 2026.

At the same time, Instagram Reels can generate significantly more organic discovery than static posts. For many brands, Reels are now an important discovery surface, WhatsApp has over 535 million users in India with ~98% open rates (Source – Aisensy), that’s your entire launch funnel. for Free.

So, if I were starting from scratch, this would be my exact roadmap to go from 0 to my first 100 customers.

This will be a 2-part article. Here, we build the discovery engine. In Part 2, we turn that discovery into paying WhatsApp orders.

My thesis is simple: Reels for discovery + WhatsApp for sales. Everything in Part 1 is designed to feed that.

How to Choose a Fashion Niche, Pricing Strategy, and Offer in India

If I were starting today, I would not launch a brand for “everyone who likes fashion.” That’s how you burn money and get ignored and shut down.

Why Is Choosing a Niche Important for a Fashion Brand in India?

According to a survey – Around 80% to 90% of new clothing and fashion startup brands fail or shut down within their first few years. (Source – Ciotimes)

The algorithm and the customer both reward specificity. If you try to serve everyone, your brand speaks to no one.

For your first 100 customers, I would lock one hyper-specific niche. From my research i have finalized few of them here below, these are in trends and you can try these if you are not sure or don’t wanna do research:

  • College streetwear in Tier-2 cities like Indore: Oversized tees, cargo fits under ₹1,499
  • Plus-size kurtis PAN-India: Focused on fit transparency and comfort
  • Minimal oversized tees for creators: Clean, content-friendly basics (Personal Bias)

Your niche dictates your hooks, your pricing, and your community. Pick one and own it.

How Should You Price a Clothing Brand in India?

What Pricing Bands Should a New Fashion Brand Use?

After niching down, the first thing I’d fix is my pricing band. Nothing kills momentum faster than 100 DMs asking “pp?”

I would set and publicly anchor two bands from Day 1:

  • Band 1: ₹699 – ₹1,499 for entry products like tees, co-ords, everyday wear.
  • Band 2: ₹1,499 – ₹2,999 for higher-value sets like ethnic sets, festive drops, or layered looks.

When your audience knows your range, they self-qualify. Your content stops attracting bargain hunters and starts attracting buyers.

How Do You Create an Offer for a New Fashion Brand?

A catalog is not an offer. If I were starting a clothing brand in India without ads, I would never launch with just “Shop Now.” I would launch with a low-risk, high-clarity entry offer.

For example:
“3 Curated College Looks Under ₹1,999 + Free Size Consultation on WhatsApp”

It does three things: it bundles (higher AOV), it removes risk (size consultation), and it moves the conversation to WhatsApp where conversion is 3x higher.

Another one I’ve seen work:
“free alteration or a free accessory for first-time customers.“

How to Set Up Your Digital Presence for a New Fashion Brand in India

How Should You Set Up an Instagram Profile for a New Fashion Brand?

After niche and price is presentation how are u presenting your bran what’s your positioning, I would treat my Instagram profile as a landing page, not a portfolio.

Name Field: This should be searchable. Don’t just write your brand name.

Write: Brand Name | Indore Streetwear | Oversized Tees or Brand Name | Plus-Size Ethnic Wear.

Name + City + Niche Or Category. Or Name + Category.

Bio Formula:

Who you serve + What makes you different + CTA.
Example:

Oversized streetwear for college fits (S-3XL) | Real bodies, honest try-ons | DM ‘SIZE’ for free fit check 👇 WhatsApp to order

Link: One link only — direct WhatsApp link, not a website.

What Should a New Clothing Brand Should Pin on Instagram Profile?

After setting up your bio, the next crucial element people often misuse is the Features section. Instead of sharing irrelevant content, this space should be used to display results, strengthen brand credibility, and convert leads.

Here is the ideal structure for your Features section:

  • New Arrivals / Offers: Highlight current promotions, discounts, or seasonal items to capture immediate interest.
  • Results / Testimonials: Showcase previous orders, transformations, or client feedback to build trust.
  • Behind the Scenes: Offer a look into your workflow, inventory management, and packaging process.
  • FAQs: Address frequently asked questions to pre-qualify leads so users reach out ready to purchase.
  • Why Choose Us (USPs): Emphasize your Unique Selling Propositions, such as handmade quality, organic materials, 24-hour shipping, or custom sizing.

After feature now we need to fix the 3 pin post, I would pin these 3 posts before posting anything else. They are your onboarding for every new visitor:

  • Pin 1: Brand story & unique positioning. Who are you, why this niche, what do you stand for?
  • Pin 2: Fabric quality, sizing, and transparency check. Show the fabric close-up, stretch test, size chart on real bodies. This builds Trust
  • Pin 3: “How to Order” video guide. A 20-second Reel showing: 1. Comment ‘LOOK’ 2. DM for details 3. Order on WhatsApp.

If a new visitor doesn’t understand what you sell and how to buy in 10 seconds, they’re gone.

The Most Common Instagram Mistake New Fashion Brands Make

This is the most common mistake I see new brand owners make and honestly, it’s such a small, silly mistake but it costs them big time.

Here’s what usually happens: You create a new IG account, you set up the bio, profile pic, link, everything looks good. You start posting. Some posts do well, some flop, and then you start getting frustrated — “What’s wrong? Why is nothing working?”

The actual problem? You have no clue what’s happening to your posts.

Because you’re still running your brand on a personal Instagram account. And a personal account doesn’t show you analytics, insights, reach, saves, shares — none of the important metrics you need to grow your brand IG account.

So as soon as you create your account, switch it to a Business or Creator profile. Right away. Here’s how you do it —

Step By Step Guide: How To Change From Personal to Professional Account in Instagram

  • Step 1: Go to your profile and open Settings Open Instagram App > Tap your Profile icon (bottom right) > Tap the 3 lines (hamburger menu) on top right > Tap Settings and privacy
  • Step 2: Go to Account type and tools Scroll down > Under For professionals section, tap on Account type and tools
  • Step 3: Switch to Professional Account Tap on Switch to professional account > Tap Continue (you will see a slider explaining what you get with professional account)
  • Step 4: Choose what suits your purpose Select your category – Search Clothing store / Clothing Brand / Fashion Designer > Tap Done > Choose Business [Recommended for clothing brand, if you are a personal brand/influencer choose Creator]

Business is best for you because you get WhatsApp contact button, Catalog, Ads, and full Insights.

Step 5: Final setup
Choose if you want to connect to a Facebook Page (you can skip for now) > Add contact info > Tap X to go back to profile. You are now on Business.

New Path :
Profile > Menu (☰) > Settings and privacy > For professionals > Account type and tools > Switch to professional account > Business

How to Set Up WhatsApp Business for a New Clothing Brand

This is your sales counter. I’d set up the free WhatsApp Business App properly:

  • Category: Clothing Store
  • Description: 2 lines — niche + delivery promise
  • Catalog: Upload products with size-wise photos and fixed prices
  • Quick Replies: Set up /price, /size, /order, /track so you can reply in seconds. Speed is conversion.

How to Create a Content and Product Catalog for a New Fashion Brand

Do You Need Professional Photography to Start a Clothing Brand?

If I were starting with ₹0 ad spend, I would not do a studio shoot. In 2026, raw phone footage sometimes out-converts polished catalog shots for new D2C fashion brands in India.

Why? Trust. People don’t trust studio lighting on a new brand. They trust a try-on in natural light where they can see transparency, fit, and fabric fall.

Shoot on your phone: full-body, back view, close-up of fabric, and a 10-sec try-on clip for each piece.

If you still want studio like product photo shoot then use AI to do it we are in AI world

Transform this ordinary raw clothing photo into a high-end studio e-commerce product shot. Keep the EXACT same garment – same color, same fabric, same print, same logo, same cut, do not redesign it. Remove background and place it on a pure seamless off-white studio background #F9F9F9. Use invisible ghost mannequin effect, perfectly ironed and steamed, no wrinkles, no creases. Professional softbox studio lighting, soft even light, realistic fabric texture, true-to-life colors, sharp focus, high resolution. Add subtle natural drop shadow underneath for depth. Centered composition, front view, e-commerce style like Zara / H&M / Myntra / Amazon. Ultra detailed, 8k.

Create a high-resolution comparison graphic with background [Put your brand color here]. Title at top center in bold dark navy: “Know What You’re Getting – 360° View” with subtitle underneath “See the complete product from every side before you buy” with a small brand color underline.

CHARACTER DEFINITION: [define character men or women – e.g., woman, man, plus size woman, male model, etc.]

PRODUCT REFERENCE: Use attached image as exact product reference. Keep the product 100% identical in all 3 cards – same color, same fabric, same design, same fit. Do NOT redesign.

Layout is 3 vertical cards side-by-side with rounded corners, thin light purple border, white background.

Card 1 – Front Look
Top label: brand color circle with number “1” + text “Front Look” + small text “[put your description here]”

How Should a New Fashion Brand Organize Products Into Content Themes?

I wouldn’t shoot random pieces. I’d organize my first drop into 5–10 collections that become content themes. This is how you never run out of ideas.

Examples from my blueprint: College Fits, Office Casual, Festive Drop, Monsoon-Proof, Date Night Edit. Each collection gives you 3-4 Reels instantly.

The Pre-Tested Hook Library Strategy

This is the difference between brands that post and brands that grow. I would recommend write 20 hooks before filming a single Reel.

Split them into problem-driven and desire-driven:

Problem: “Tired of boring college outfits that look the same?”
Desire: “Festive looks under ₹1499 that don’t look cheap”

When you pre-test hooks, you stop guessing. You film what your audience already wants to hear.

How to Get Organic Reach For New Fashion Brand With Instagram Reels?

This is the core of how to start a clothing brand in India without ads. This is your Instagram Reels strategy for clothing brand growth.

The 2026 Algorithm Signals That Matter

I would ignore likes. In 2026, two signals matter most for the Instagram algorithm: watch completion rate and DM shares/saves. (Source – creatorflow)

If people watch till the end (15-30 sec) and share it to a friend or save it for later, Instagram pushes it to non-followers. That’s free reach. Likes and comments are vanity now.

So at the end of the reel, use a strong Call to Action (CTA)—like ‘Save this so you can find it later,‘ ‘DM me for details (it’s free!),‘ or ‘Share this with a friend who needs it.’

What Types of Reels Should a Clothing Brand Post?

From my research on zero ad spend D2C fashion India brands, these 3 formats consistently drive discovery to inquiry:

Format 1: Outfit Transformations. Before/After styling. Text overlay: “Boring college fit → 3 ways to style our cargo.” Fast cuts, clear value.

Format 2: The “₹X Challenge”. This taps into Indian price sensitivity. Example: “3 full outfits under ₹1,999 challenge” or “Monsoon-proof fits under ₹999”. Highly saveable and shareable.

Format 3: Honest Try-Ons across diverse body types. Show the same kurti/tee on S, XL, and 3XL. Talk openly about stretch, transparency, comfort. This builds massive trust and kills return rates.

How Often Should a Clothing Brand Post Reels?

Follow this non-negotiable rules:

  • Length: Keep Reels 15–30 seconds long. Completion rate is everything.
  • Audio: Always pick audio from Instagram’s ‘Trending’ section. My data shows it gives a 20-40% reach bump when you’re under 5k followers.
  • Batching: Don’t film daily. Batch-film 8–10 Reels in one day every 2 weeks. I’d plan 4–5 Reels per week — that consistency is what makes brands grow 2-3x faster than occasional posters.

What Is the Best Time to Post Reels for a Fashion Brand?

I would recommend do some hit and trial with this because it’s different for everyone you need to post at least a week or two before you understand what’s working for you and your right posting time but if you still want to know what’s the right time i did some research and figure out some time that could work for your clothing brand –

So according to my research – I’d post at peak India times to start: 7–9 AM and 8–10 PM IST on weekdays, late mornings on weekends. After 2-3 weeks, I’d check Instagram Insights and double down on my own audience’s best slots.

This entire Reels engine is your free customer acquisition system for your D2C fashion launch blueprint 2026.

Before you Start do one final check for everything i have created a checklist so you don’t miss out anything

What Should You Do After Setting Up Everything?
