The Election Commission of India has released the data on Electoral bonds which have been issued for donations to political parties. ECI has published the names of the entities that purchased the electoral bonds to fund political parties.

This comes after the Supreme Court ordered to stop issuing the Electoral bonds and asked SBI to send the data of Electoral Bonds. The data was shocking and you too can have a look at the data about the political party funding here.

What Is Electoral Bond?

Supreme court has ordered SBI to unveil the data about electoral bonds before stopping its issuance further. SC has asked to send the data to the Election Commission of India (ECI) where it will be publishing the data on Electoral Bonds on its website

Now SBI has released the information about the Electoral bonds to ECI from April 2019 – January 2024, where the government introduced the Electoral Bonds for funding political parties. You can check the major contributions of funding to the political parties all over India.

Popular And Unpopular Companies:

Popular industrialists and companies like Steel Tycoon Lakshmi Mittal purchased Rs35 crores worth of bonds, Airtel’s Sunil Bharati Mittal with Rs246 crores worth of bonds, Vedanta with Rs398 crores worth bonds, ITC and Mahindra were among the known who brought Electoral Bonds to fund political parties. The least-known company Future Gaming and Hotel Services bought Electoral Bonds worth Rs1,350 crores. Even Hyderabad’s Megha Engineering bought bonds worth Rs 966 crores. Another 213 donors purchased over Rs10 crore bonds.

It is surprising that out of the top 30 donors of political funding, 14 were raided by probe agencies like ED and IT teams. SBI was ordered to share detailed information related to Electoral Bonds to ensure transparency and accountability towards political funding. SBI shared the details of purchases, the date of conversion of bonds into cash along with names of political parties.

Conclusion:

Supreme Court again ordered to publishing of the electoral bond numbers, which will reveal the link between donors and political parties after expressing its dissatisfaction, over not sharing the complete data on electoral bonds. A total of 22,217 bonds were purchased while 22,030 bonds were turned into cash by political parties. BJP was the biggest beneficiary from the Electoral bonds where it has received Rs6,060.5 crores.
