The people who are in the areas affected by the “Michaung cyclone” please stay safe and take necessary actions to stay safe along with cooperating with the disaster relief management teams to help each other if any kind of problem arises. This cyclone was hit very hard by huge winds coming to coastal areas with 110kmph with heavy rainfall from morning 3 am to 6 pm on 4th December 2023.

Chennai city has seen continuous rains on the before day which led to this situation becoming worse. All the houses, roads and low-lying areas are flooded by heavy rains with a level of water up to the knees. A huge 400 – 500mm of rainfall has been registered for 2 days which is the highest of than 2015 “Chennai deluge” with 330mm of rainfall in total.

Cyclone Effect In Chennai:

The other parts of Tamilnadu have also seen heavy rainfall continuously with Chennai being the most affected area. This Michaung cyclone has entered the areas of Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha which are the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal. With Chennai being the most affected area by floods and rainfall several parts of Andhra Pradesh has also seen heavy downpour of rainfall continuously along with heavy rains in Odisha.

With the outage of power and food supply with several collapses of buildings and trees the people in Chennai are facing huge problems that disturb their daily lives. The safe public places have been occupied by locals while many non-localshas have been stuck in Chennai due to the cyclone effect. Several dams which are filled with heavy water due to rainfall have opened the gates to flow. The crop fields in Andhra Pradesh are damaged due to heavy rains causing debt to many farmers.

Transport Shelved:

All transport services have been halted for the entire day on 4th December 2023 due to the effect of floods. The flight services have been stopped with immediate effect due to water logging on the runway and stop area and the flights that need to be landed in Chennai are moved to Bangalore airport for landing.

The railways have stopped the services in the flood-hit areas without any kind of movement of trains at stations. Even the local transport has stopped its services totally due to heavy water on the roads. Many private transport vehicles like cab services have been stuck in floods and are then rescued by relief management teams. Several deaths have been reported due to floods in Chennai with official records numbered 8.

Along with the several disaster management teams the military teams have been deployed for rescue operations in Chennai. The central government has provided the necessary support for the cyclone-affected states. Even the Odisha government has provided remarkable effort in coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

The people from other regions who are stuck in flood-hit areas have been provided with the necessary support for shelter and transport if possible. After the strong effect of the cyclone in Chennai for two days it is moved to coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh on 5th December 2023. The state has issued a Red Alert to stay safe. Even though there was heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh coastal areas along with Tamilnadu the cyclone has affected the most in Chennai causing floods.

Conclusion:

The floods in Chennai are the main cause of the high amount of rainfall for two days with high winds blowing towards the shore. Since the rainfall on 5th December 2023 in Chennai has been reduced significantly the relief management teams can now work on restoration of services and help the people in need.

There is a high alert on the same day in Andhra Pradesh for high rainfall due to the same cyclone which should be taken care of. The disaster management relief teams have worked relentlessly to make sure there is not a single unwanted incident due to floods in Chennai and provided all the support.
