The travel from Sewri, South Mumbai, to Chirle, Navi Mumbai, is going to be easy now not only that you can travel between these locations in less time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate India’s first longest sea bridge on 12th January 2024. This six-lane bridge is going to reduce the time for travel between the destinations which was developed by the Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This article is all about India’s first longest sea bridge.
This project, named the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) was started in 2018 with a deadline to finish by April 2023, but the project got delayed due to the COVID pandemic.
This most prestigious project costs ₹ 21,200 Crore, which is 22 km long. Since the budget was huge, the Indian government partnered with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for financing. However, this sea route is not free.
They have planned to charge people through tollgates prices starting from 250 rupees. (The Chareges Will Be the Same For Every Vehicles)
Charges List –
- ₹ 250/- For Single Trip.
- ₹ 375/- For Return Trip.
- ₹ 625/- For Daily Pass.
- ₹ 12,500/- For Monthly Pass.
These toll rates are obtained from sources: they have not been officially announced yet. also, these prices will be reviewed after one year of starting its operation. In a total of ₹ 21,200 Crore, ₹15,000 Crores has come up in the form of loans which have to be repaid by the government.
The Connectivity:
It is expected to accommodate around 70,000 vehicles daily with an average speed of 100KMPH. The vehicles would take 15 minutes to cover the distance between Sewri and Chirle crossing Thane Creek. This new bridge is going to reduce the time of 2hrs from Sewri – Chirle to 15 minutes which eases traveling time. This bridge will have interchanges at Shivaji Nagar, Jassi on National Highway 4B.
This bridge will also reduce the travel time from Mumbai to Pune, Goa, and South India. This bridge is going to be equipped with an AI camera for an alert control room regarding any accidents and breakdowns so that the damaged vehicles will not be abandoned for a long time.
Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Travelling Rules:
- The Maximum Speed Limit Is Set For 100KMPH
- Motorbikes, Auto Rikshaws, And Tractors Are Not Allowed To Enter The Sea Bridge.
- The Ascent And Descent Speed Are Limited To 40KMPH Depending On The Traffic Conditions.
- Any Slow-Moving Vehicles Are Restricted To Enter The Sea Bridge.
- Multi-Axle Vehicles Won’t Have Entry On The Eastern Freeway, Where They Have To Use Mumbai Port-Sewri Exit (Exit 1C) And Then Take MBPT Road Near ‘GADI ADDA’.
This bridge will connect to the two largest cities through the Arterial Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Mumbai police said the speed restrictions are only to avoid the inconvenience while traveling on the sea bridge.

The bridge is named after PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and is also called ATAL SETU.
