G20 Summit 2023: All you need to know before travelling to Delhi

The G20 Summit is a major international event that brings together the leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies to discuss global issues and cooperation. This year, the G20 summit will take place in Delhi, India, from September 9 and 10, 2023.

If you are planning to visit Delhi during this time, you may be wondering how to travel around the city and what restrictions or guidelines are in place due to the summit. Here are some tips and information to help you plan your trip and enjoy your stay in Delhi.

How to get to Delhi?

The best way to get to Delhi is by air, as the city has two international airports: Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).  The airport is well-connected to domestic and international destinations, and offers various modes of transport to the city centre, such as taxis, buses, metro trains, and autorickshaws.

However, you should be aware that there may be some delays or disruptions in flight operations due to the summit, especially on the days of the arrival and departure of the leaders. Therefore, it is advisable to check your flight status before leaving for the airport and arrive well in advance of your scheduled departure time. You should also follow the instructions of the airport staff and security personnel, and cooperate with any screening or checking procedures.

How to travel within Delhi?

Delhi has a comprehensive public transport system that includes buses, metro trains, autorickshaws, cycle rickshaws, e-rickshaws, taxis, and app-based cabs. You can use any of these modes to travel within the city, depending on your preference, budget, and convenience.

However, you should also be prepared for some traffic congestion and road closures due to the summit, especially in the areas near the summit venue (the Vigyan Bhawan), the hotels where the leaders are staying, and the places where they are visiting. Therefore, it is advisable to plan your itinerary in advance, avoid peak hours, use alternative routes if possible, and follow the directions of the traffic police and security personnel. You should also carry valid identity proof with you at all times, as you may be asked to show it at certain checkpoints or entry points.

Here are some things you need to know before you head out.

  • The area around Rashtrapati Bhavan, including Rajpath, Vijay Chowk, North and South Block, Parliament House and India Gate, will be completely closed for traffic from 6 am to 9 pm on both days of the summit. No vehicles will be allowed to enter or exit this area, except for those with special passes issued by the police.
  • The roads leading to Rashtrapati Bhavan, such as Raisina Road, Mother Teresa Crescent, Akbar Road, Janpath, Man Singh Road, Ashoka Road and Kasturba Gandhi Marg, will also be closed for traffic during the same time period. Only vehicles with valid passes or stickers will be allowed to ply on these roads.
  • The Delhi Metro will also suspend its services at some stations near Rashtrapati Bhavan, such as Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Patel Chowk and Lok Kalyan Marg, from 6 am to 9 pm on both days. The metro stations at Khan Market, Racecourse and Jor Bagh will remain open but with restricted entry and exit points.
  • The Delhi Airport will operate as usual but passengers are advised to reach well in advance and avoid taking routes that are affected by the traffic restrictions. The airport authorities have also requested passengers to carry their boarding passes and identity proofs with them at all times.
  • The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will run special buses for the public from various locations in the city to the nearest metro stations that are operational. The DTC has also deployed extra buses on routes that are not affected by the traffic restrictions.
