Dangal child artist Suhani Bhatnagar died of a rare condition called Dermatomyositis. Though she has been admitted to the hospital for around 10 days, she has not responded to treatment and medication. There was no improvement in her health condition even after medication & treatment and eventually, she was unable to survive, leaving her pain due to her death in her family.

Her family officially announced she was no more on 17th February 2024 with the reasons for her death. Have a look at this article to know the cause and effect of the disease and how she was affected by the disease.

Suhani Bhatnagar:

Suhani Bhatnagar passed away at just 19 years of age from a rare disease called “Dermatomyositis”. She was affected with the rare disease “Dermatomyositis” with a symptom of red spots on her hands about 2 months back.

Immediately she consulted doctors thinking it was an allergy in different hospitals but was unable to treat it. Finally, she was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after she was affected by the disease on the 7th of February 2024.

Hospital Fight:

She was admitted to the hospital when her health condition started to decline due to rashes and muscle weakness. Even after admitting to the hospital, there was no improvement in her health condition and her lungs got infected with an accumulation of Excessive fluid.

She was then sent to a ventilator but as no improvement again. Despite ventilation, her oxygen levels dropped significantly with her immune system impacted by medication or steroids. On the 17th February evening at 7.00 pm, she was declared as no more. Her father claimed there were only 5 to 6 people who were affected by this Dermatomyositis in the world. Her cremation was done at Ajronda cremation ground.

What Is Dermatomyositis:

Dermatomyositis is a rare inflammatory disease that can be seen in muscle weakness and distinctive skin rashes. This will also affect other organ systems such as the pulmonary, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular systems.  It is a rare disease with no cure as of now and occurs mostly in women.

This disease usually occurs after 40 – 60 years of age. In children, this occurs between 5 to 15 years of age. There is no cure but repetitive medical consultancy can reduce the impact, gradually decreasing the disease.

Dermatomyositis Symptoms:

  1. Skin rashes: Rashes on any part of the body with pain and itch are often the first signs of dermatomyositis.
  2. Muscle weakness: A gradual decrease in muscle strength is seen as a symptom of dermatomyositis. Muscles of the thighs, shoulders, upper arms, and neck will be affected the most with dermatomyositis.

How Dermatomyositis Happens:

There is no exact cause of dermatomyositis from the outside world. However it is known that the immune system mistakenly attacks body tissues internally, which is seen very rarely.

Problems Associated With Dermatomyositis:

There are certain problems associated with dermatomyositis such as difficulty in swallowing, aspiration pneumonia, breathing problems, and calcium deposits.

  1. Swallowing becomes difficult if the muscles in the esophagus are affected. This will cause weight loss and malnutrition.
  2. If the swallowing becomes difficult then there might be chances of breathing food and liquids. This problem is known as aspiration pneumonia
  3. If chest muscles are affected due to this then there might be problems related to breathing as well.
  4. As the disease progresses calcium deposits are accumulated in muscles, skin, and tissues. In children this problem will be caused first and then other problems.

This dermatomyositis also increases the risk of other problems like Raynaud’s phenomenon, tissue diseases, cardiovascular disease, lung disease, and cancer.

  1. Raynaud’s phenomenon is a condition where fingers, toes, cheeks, nose, and ears turn pale when exposed to cold temperatures.
  2. Tissue-related problems like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, and sjogren’s syndrome will be caused
  3. Heart muscle inflammation, heart failure, and heart rhythm problems will have risk under Cardiovascular disease.
  4. Disorders related to lung tissue make lungs stiff and inelastic causing dry cough and shortness of breath.
  5. In most adults, the occurrence of dermatomyositis has been linked with cancer and its related problems.
Conclusion:

She took a break from films as she wanted to complete her studies. The production house of Dangal conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the family and stated that Dangal would have been incomplete without Suhani.

Dangal was released in 2016 and her performance stood as one of the additions to the film’s success. Her death left her fans and parents in unpredicted shock. She fought for her life on a ventilator for almost 10 days after being admitted to the hospital but was unable to survive the battle with Dermatomyositis.
