Delhi Air Pollution: 50 Cigarettes a Day? City on High Alert

Delhi is the capital of Indian pollution. I am not wrong in saying the capital of pollution because the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi is very hazardous to breathe. I don’t know how many cigarettes the Delhi crowd in total are consuming per day which is explained in the story, but this is a serious issue to look after. Do you know that around 20% of deaths reported in India are due to air pollution?
This is not the 1st time that Delhi recorded its peak in air pollution but this time it was recorded consecutively which is an alert for the Delhi crowd. The air quality index ranking tells about air quality which can be considered as the amount of purity in air.
What Is the Air Quality Index
The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a measure of how clean or polluted the air is. It is calculated using the concentrations of five major pollutants: ground-level ozone, particle pollution (also known as particulate matter), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. The AQI is reported on a scale of 0 to 500, with higher numbers indicating worse air quality.
Air Quality Index readings
0 – 50: good
51 – 100: Moderate
101 –200: poor
201 – 300: unhealthy
301 – 400: Severe
401 –500: hazardous
If you think that the air pollution is only up to 500 units then you are wrong but it can be recorded as much as the air pollution is available and above 400 is considered as hazardous. In COVID the pollution in Delhi was low where the purity was good but after the lockdown again the pollution has recorded high in some areas.
Pollution Consumption:
Since the past two years an AQI of 999+ has been recorded in some areas in the early morningin different days and consecutively a high of 400+ was recorded which can be considered as consuming 45-50 cigarettes per day even if there is no habit of consuming cigarettes. The Delhi government has taken measures to reduce air pollution by bringing electric vehicles into use and as well as initiation of usage of public transport by avoiding personal vehicles.

Delhi On High Alert:
On November 2nd 2023 the AQI recorded 999+ which was very hazardous to breathe considering 45-50 cigarettes for 400+ reading imagine for 999+ it might be as much as consuming 100+ cigarettes per day. This was recorded consequently for 4 days in the early mornings in major parts of Delhi which is hazardous to Delhi crowd and decreases the lifetime of Delhi crowd along with getting health problems related to breathing.
After this, the Delhi government announced 4days of holidays at first which was extended to 10 days later to avoid the breathing of polluted air by children which might cause severe breathing problems in children.
Delhi Measures To Tackle Air Pollution:
The Delhi government plans to implement several strategies to tackle air pollution in the city like an odd-even vehicle system on roads, bringing artificial rain, promoting only public transport for some days by avoiding personal vehicles and strict guidelines. Even eliminating the usage of age-restricted vehicles along with a ban on bursting crackers for any kind of event in the city.
Conclusion:
Air pollution is a serious problem in Delhi, but the government is taking steps to address it. Delhi residents need to be aware of the risks and take precautions to protect their health, such as avoiding outdoor activity during peak pollution times and wearing a mask when outdoors.
