Who Is Dhanvantri?:

In Hindu scripts, the goddess Dhavantri gave knowledge of Ayurveda medicine to humankind to eliminate diseases. Dhavantri is a physician to all gods raised from Samudra Manthan with Ayurveda books and Amrit pot in both hands where we offer prayers to seek good health.

The birth of goddess Lakshmi:

According to Hindu scripts, the goddess Lakshmi was also born from Samudra Manthan giving a lot of gold fortune, happiness, and wealth to all gods. Here everyone cleans their houses and puts rangoli in front of the door to call up goddess Lakshmi to home where goddess Lakshmi provides much wealth and happiness.

The Samudra Manthan, which gave birth to Dhanvantari and the goddess Lakshmi, was a significant event in Hindu mythology.

What is Yamadeepdaan and why is it celebrated on Dhanteras?

Yamraj : Dhanteras

King Hima had a son and upon checking the horoscope of his son the pandits revealed death at the age of 16 after the marriage of 4 days caused by snake bite. However, After the marriage, his wife on the 4th day made her husband wake up all night and spread all the gold coins, and ornaments around the room and sing songs. When the Yama raj arrived he was unable to see anything due to the lighting reflection of gold and the singing made him stay all night at the door and leave that morning without killing her husband This is also a reason for calling “Dhanteras” as “Yamadeepdan”. Where the people offer gold to Yama Raj and pray for long lives.

Conclusion:

Everyone prays for Dhavantri, goddess Lakshmi and Yama Raj in the evening for good wealth, happiness and long life. They clean houses and put rangoli at the doorstep to invite goddess Lakshmi as Lakshmi only comes to clean places. On this auspicious day, everyone tends to bring gold and silver to their home as a symbol of luck which brings happiness and good wealth and some even pray for their source of income. This festival is celebrated for 5 -6 days by wearing traditional dresses, and keeping lamps around the house which reflects as offering prayers to goddess and Yama raj.
