What is Satellite Based Toll Collection?

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that a satellite based toll collection system will be introduced this year which will put an end to the regular toll collection. “This satellite-based toll collection will deduct the amount directly from your bank account based on the distance traveled.”

This system will reduce the travel time along with traffic congestion at the toll plazas which will benefit the travelers. Even though there are policies regarding the traffic at the toll plazas, the traffic has been a heavy issue along with the amount paid to the toll company.

As of now, travelers have to pay a fixed amount to the toll companies even though they might not cover the total distance.

When Will a Satellite Base Toll Collection System Will Be launched?

Previously last year in December Nitin Gadkari stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will introduce the satellite-based toll collection by March 2024.

However, the actual implementation of this new satellite-based toll collection will take a few more months on selected national highways.

As per Nitin Gadkari which has been communicated with the World Bank, it is said that the average waiting time at the toll plazas has been reduced to 47 seconds from the earlier waiting period of 714 seconds. The construction and expansion of National highways have seen an approximate rise of 10% last year.

The GPS-based technology will calculate the exact distance traveled on the highways and the number plate recognition is done via automatic number plate reader (ANPR) cameras installed on highways.

The technology-based initiatives are being introduced to improve the efficiency of the satellite-based toll collection or GPS-based toll collection which will ease the travel on highways. The national highways have been improved in the last 5 years where the travel time and traffic have been reduced significantly.

The number of new national highways along with increasing the lanes of existing national highways has seen much progress.

Satellite Based Toll Collection on Bengaluru

Union government has decided to start a pilot project of Satellite based toll collection or Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) on the 10-line Mysuru-Bengaluru expressway highway. To implement the GNSS the government has appointed a consultant to provide the services.

This GNSS system will allow barrier-free movement of vehicles where vehicles are not required to stop for toll payments. The GNSS system will capture the registration plate of the vehicle and deduct the amount based on the actual length traveled on the highway which will replace the Radio Frequency Identification based toll-based fastags (RFID).

The GNSS system of the initial stage is planned only for selected national highways which will be later implemented in all other national highways.

Conclusion

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) collects around Rs40,000 crores of toll revenue currently, and this amount is set to rise to a new level and the estimated amount will be around Rs1.4 trillion in the next 3 years.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is very confident that the new Satellite based toll collection system will be introduced this year and become successful.

Nitin Gadkari has expressed his commitment to change the national highways similar to American highways in the coming years.
