The birth rate of North Korea and Russia has been falling for decades. The leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin have expressed their concerns regarding the birth rate in their respective countries.
Leader Kim Jong Un addressed this at “The National Mothers Meeting” while Putin said this at “The World Russian People’s Council”.

The National Mothers Meeting:
This event was held on December 3rd, 2023, and was the first of its kind in 11 years. Leader Kim Jong Un addressed the mothers in attendance, urging them to have more children to combat the country’s declining birthrate. He also highlighted the importance of child care and education, stating that these are “family affairs” that need to be addressed together.
Kim Jong Un In Tears:
National Mothers Meeting which was held at Pyongyang, the Capital of North Korea on 3rd and 4th December 2023. At the event, the leader Kim was seen in tears after a presentation about the Birth rate and Education which was the main motive of the event. The presentation showed the decline in birth rates over the years. There are several projections from different organizations about the decline of the Birth rate in North Korea from previous years to the future decades.

North Korea Population Decline Statistic:
The Hyundai Research Institute in Seoul said that it is expected to decrease the population from 2034 with more intense. The population of North Korea in 2021 was 25.97 million which would decrease to 23.75 million by 2070. All these numbers are based on the current decrease in population over the past years which also states that a high-intensity decrease in population will start from the year 2034.
Putin Urges People To Have 8 Kids:
On the other side, Putin also urged people to have more kids at The World Russian People’s Council on 5th December 2023 which was conducted in Moscow. Putin said the families to have as many as eight kids since they have seen a greater number of deaths and casualties from the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2021.
From several reports, it is stated that the Birth rate in Russia has been decreasing since 1990. Putin has stated that many families in the past have followed a tradition of having more than 4 kids and said to retrieve this tradition now which should become the way of life in the people of Russia. He also stated that he has a goal of increasing the birth rate in the country in the coming future.
Population Decline Effects:
North Korea is aiming to increase the Birth rate and child care considering them as the most important thing that should be taken care of. This is the first time the government in North Korea has spoken about the decline of the birth rate in the country as this can be one of the affecting factors of the population in the future that may become cautious.
These two countries have seen a decline in birth rates and their leaders have to address this issue on their own otherwise it may lead to affect social factors of the country like Population, Social Development, Dependency Rate, etc.
Conclusion:
Both leaders expressed their support to increase the birth rate and the Russian government extended its support in different ways like maternity capital. The Russian government is providing monetary fund support to mothers having more than 1 child. A few more benefits like early-stage benefits and monthly child care benefits are also provided as part of maternity capital. This shows the great intent of the Russian government to increase the Birth rate in their country.
FACT: India is in first position with a population of 1, 425.8 million while China is the second highest with 1,425.7 million which has lost its first position in population recently.
