NCERT Recommended A Panel To Change India With Bharat In Textbooks.
What is the ongoing issue?
Govt. introduced NEW EDUCATION POLICY in 2020. The policy is anticipated to take years for its implementation and that too in a phased manner.
In 2022 NCERT formed a committee called the Social Science Committee which suggested India be replaced by Bharat in all Social Science textbooks up to Class 12.
The logic behind this was to teach students classical history.
The noteworthy point is that the committee’s chairman Prof CI Issac said that the committee is hoping the recommendation will be implemented from next academic year i.e. 2024.
This statement takes the attention to G20 Summit 2023 in New Delhi as it came after the Summit. The G20 Summit controversy was that Bharat was used on official invitations instead of India.
So people are speculating whether the country’s name will change or not.

Can India change its name to Bharat?
To name a country many factors are considered like-
1 Historical
2 Ideological
3 Constitutional
4 International
5 Implications
Looking from a historical perspective Muslim League created controversy in India after 1947.
In 1947 British created two states one was India and the other was Pakistan. Pakistan debated India to be named Bharat. The issue was taken to the UN. India argued Pakistan seceded from India. India emerged from British India has a permanent seat in the UN and has recognition
by International Laws and the UN. Pakistan is a new country so, have to get it all. The debate worked in India’s favour and India retained its name in all International and multilateral fora. On 25 August PM visited Greece letters were issued where India in English and Bharat in Hindi was used.
When seen from an ideological perspective India has been a colony for more than 100 years. Before that the country was clans of different dynasties and the concept of country was not even there. But colonization created unity from north to south to fight the common enemy for the common goal of freedom and by that time India had come into existence.
Now looking at the records, the Indian Constitution was adopted in English by the constituent assembly. A Hindi translation was also made later in 1950 and adopted by that assembly. By Constitutional Amendment Act 58 public constitution has to be published in Hindi as well for legal procedures.
India and Bharat are the same, the language is the only thing that is different. If one goes to change its name then the Govt of India has to apply to all International and Multinational fora along with their laws to get the name changed internationally as well. This will be a hectic process but the need is not that much. So the output and the investment are more or less unbalanced. So the Govt should think prudently before taking any decision.
