With a rare condition, a baby was born in China with a small 4-inch tail that came from his back. The tail was identified shortly after the birth of the baby by Dr. Li who was a deputy chief physician of neurosurgery. Tethered Spinal Cord Condition:
Dr. Li, deputy chief physician of neuro surgery identified that a baby was born with a short 4–inch tail from its back. At first, he suspected the cause might be incomplete regeneration but Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed the exact cause of the tail in the baby.
The MRI confirmed it was a tethered spinal cord condition. This tethered spinal cord condition arises when the spinal cord is abnormally connected to surrounding tissues which usually takes place at the base of the spine, which means at the bottom. This condition comes with many complications and restricted movement of the spinal cord.
However, doctors decided to not remove the tail as it is connected to the baby’s nervous system even after the mother requested the removal. Doctors stated the removal of the tail can cause unchangeable damages. In a similar kind of case, American doctors removed a tail from a 10-day baby last year where the tail occurred due to a caudal appendage.
Social Media:
Dr. Li of Hangzhou Children Hospital shared the condition on social media which gained huge attention. The tail is soft and boneless and measures around 10cm in length. As per doctors, this tail will reduce the flexibility of movement of the spinal cord causing neurological issues.
This condition was posted by the doctor on the Douyin platform which is similar to TikTok which gained 34,000 likes and 1,45,000 shares after it got posted on 11th March 2024. This condition is very rare that 1 in 1000 people occurs the tail represents the human’s evolutionary past that is no longer serving any purpose. Human ancestors used to climb trees and do other activities with the support of the tail however with the evolution, the tail got merged into the body.
Conclusion:
This is not the first time that a baby’s been born with tails due to a rare condition. Many times, doctors successfully remove the tail from the baby’s body depending on the condition while in this condition doctors fear that removing the tail may damage the baby’s nervous system. It is still unknown whether the baby’s parents are willing to move to other countries to remove their baby’s tail by the expert’s choice.
