PM Narendra Modi is set to launch another prestigious project which is India’s first Underwater Metro Services in Kolkata. The Metro rail service section Howrah Maidan-Esplanade which comes under East West Metro Corridor would support transportation of around 7 lakhs per day.
The Inauguration of the project is set to create history as it is the deepest metro in India. The inauguration is scheduled on 6th march 2024 where we have provided everything about the inauguration and the services in this article.
First Underwater Metro In India:
The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section in Kolkata which has completed its trail run last year in April is set for inauguration on 6th march 2024. PM Modi will inaugurate the underwater metro services which will be running from Howrah Maidan and Esplanade under 16 meters down the river.
This underwater metro tunnel was built under Kolkata’s Hooghly River which is part of 16.5km of East-West Metro corridor. This underwater Metro service project was constructed and executed by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) where 10.8km is underground and 5.75km is on the bridge.
Tunnel Significance:
This underwater metro service will reduce the traffic congestion in Kolkata along with support for reducing time of travel between the cities. This underwater metro service will have a total of 6 stations where 3 are built underground with one of the underground station as Howrah.
Howrah Metro station is the largest station in India along with Majerhat Metro station as a elevated metro station which includes a canal. Reports claim the Howrah Metro station is as long as 10 storey building which is situated under 30.5 meters deep to connect with 40metre deep under water trunnels. This under water tunnel have all the safety measures ready under any circumstances.
When Will This Tunnel Be Available For Public:
Though this project is scheduled for inauguration on 6th march 2024 the Esplanade to Sealdah section is not completed. This section will be completed by June-July of 2024 while the Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah section is already running. So, the total East-West corridor will be completed and can be operational by June-July.
People can travel 520 meters distance under just 45seconds. This under water metro works on Automatic Train Operation System (ATO). Here the Metro Train moves automatically from one station to another after a long press of ATO Departure push button by Motorman.
Conclsuion:
The same project was planned in British Era but due to funding issues and several concerns at that time the project did not materialize into real world. As this underwater metro services is first in India this could attract many tourists as they want to experience it.
Even people from India also show similar interest if they plan for any kind of similar interest. This can be made more attractive and best underwater metro services if considered as tourist attraction by the government.
