India and Taiwan signed an MoU to meet the labour demand in Taiwan. This agreement comes after several years of discussions between the countries that will establish a strong bond and cooperation. Taiwan has been looking for migrant workers from Southeast Asia however it is now looking after India for migrant workers.

India And Taiwan Sign MoU:

On 16th February 2024 India and Taiwan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to allow Indian workers into Taiwan. Taiwan is currently facing a shortage of workers which is going to provide employment opportunities to Indian workers.

Taiwan’s manufacturing, construction and agriculture sectors are facing a shortage of workers and it has signed an MoU with India, to allow permits into Taiwan. This Mou was signed at a virtual ceremony by the Director General of India “Manharsinh Laxmanbhai Yadav” and the Taipei Association head “Baushuan Ger” in New Delhi.

What You Need To Work In Taiwan:

Taiwan Labour Ministry said they will look for Indian workers with good proficiency in English on a small scale. However, if the initiative is successful Taiwan government will increase the number of openings gradually.

Two countries are planning for meetings regarding this as soon as possible with discussions about employment industries, jobs, qualifications, skills, regions of source in Taiwan along recruitment methods. The MoU states that employment industries and job openings will be decided by the Taiwan government itself however Indian government will provide training for employment opportunities in Taiwan along with regulations.

Both countries completed the procedures of mobility and migration last year and a few medical tests and alignment of the migration database between the countries is yet to be done. After all the procedures are completed, Taiwan will announce India as their source country of migrant workers about terms and conditions.

Why the Labour Shortage Happened in Taiwan:

Taiwan stated the demand for workers is caused by to ageing of the population along with the low birth rate in their country. Due to this the working population declined to very small numbers in several sectors. so, as the demand rises, Taiwan country is looking for migrant workers in the most trustworthy countries.

Taiwan government has already provided work permits to migrant workers from countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand. Taiwan’s government has recognized Indian workers as hard and stable workers with good reviews as other countries are providing employment opportunities for Indian workers. Countries such as Germany, Italy, France, Singapore and Malaysia have been looking for Indian workers in several industries to work.

Both countries will be looking after the implementation of the MoU as soon as possible since Taiwan is facing a huge decline in workers. Taiwan migrant workers till now have been working in Semiconductor production plants with 7 lakh migrants in the country already.

It is unknown in which sectors Indian workers will be working but few reports claim Indians might be working in Manufacturing Industry or as home helpers. Taiwan has been struggling to fulfil the demand for workers in its country for the last 3-4 years and now it is looking after migrant workers from India.

Taiwan representative in India “Baushuan Ger” met Mizoram chief Minster “Lalduhoma” on February 12th with a meeting and held talks on labour mobility, education and agriculture cooperation.
