In a symbolic clash of tradition and technology, farmers protesting at the Shambhu border against the controversial farm laws engaged in a unique battle against tear gas-dropping drones. Flying kites to counter the drones, the farmers aimed to limit the tear-gas firing zone and protect themselves during their ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest.
Tear Gas From Skies:
Haryana Police, facing the challenge of stone-pelting protesters, deployed drones to drop tear gas shells on farmers, attempting to deter them from advancing towards Delhi. This marked an escalation in tactics, leading to clashes between law enforcement and protestors at the Shambhu border.
Drone Vs Flying Kites Fight:
Not feared by the drone threat, farmers resorted to a creative countermeasure – flying kites. The idea was to use the kites to limit the tear-gas firing zone of the drones. However, drone operators maintained that the sharp blades and high rotation speed made the kites ineffective in hindering the drones’ operations.
The clash extended beyond the skies, leading to a territorial dispute between Haryana and Punjab. Punjab authorities objected to the use of drones, claiming that tear gas canisters were dropped well inside Punjab territory. This dispute added a layer of complexity to the ongoing protests.
7 Layer Security Measure By Police:
As the farmers’ protests entered the third day, security measures were intensified at the Shambhu border and other protest sites. Delhi Police implemented seven layers of security to prevent the farmers’ march towards the national capital. Despite clashes and tensions, protesting farmers expressed hope for a middle ground during talks with the central government.
Bharat Bandh:
The ongoing farmers’ agitation took a political turn, with the announcement of a Bharat Bandh by farmers’ unions. The demands included pensions for farmers, MSP for crops, the implementation of the old pension scheme, and the withdrawal of amendments to labour laws. Meanwhile, political statements from leaders like Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij added fuel to the fiery discourse surrounding the protests.
