Do you know you can watch any internet videos or YouTube videos without a SIM card inserted into your mobile?

Direct To Mobile Technology (D2M) is where you can stream videos without any SIM card inserted in your mobile that is going to become available for all users in the coming years. The Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra said it is an emerging technology that would reduce the traffic congestion on the 5G network in coming years. Know in detail about the technology by reading this article.

What Is Direct To Mobile Technology:

The project test for D2M technology was held last year in Bengaluru, Kartavya Path and Noida locations and soon the trials will be starting in 19 cities in the spectrum line of 470-582 MHZ said Information and Broadcasting secretary.

The increase in traffic over SIM card networks led to buffering and slow streaming of internet videos by which the government had come up with this new D2M technology which can be accessed by the public soon.

Though huge users can be benefitted from this it takes time to shift from SIM card services. It is said that a 25-30% shift of users from SIM card services can free the traffic over the network which results in buffer-free streaming.

The availability of D2M technology can reach 8 – 9 million houses with no television in their homes across the country.

This technology was developed by Sankhya Labs and IIT Kanpur which can change the old way of communication through audio, video and data signals. This can bring a reduction in cost for the transmission of data and increase network efficiency.

This technology will directly transfer the content using broadcast signals without any use of a SIM card. The broadcast technology is similar to TV and Radio which are entirely different from regular cellular data networks which use separate hardware that receive and decode signals of broadcast in the smartphones.

This technology requires additional hardware components in smartphones which changes the hardware compatibility of the smartphones. Hardware components like Advanced Televisionsystem Committee 3.0 (ATSC) and Next Gen TV should be introduced to receive and decode broadcast signals. This adoption for introducing the technology improves the manufacturing cost of smartphones which may lead to an increase in smartphone prices.

The introduction of this technology faced opponents like Qualcomm, Samsung, and Ericsson along with telecom operators due to fear of increased demand for D2M technology in future.

Requirement And Control Of Technology:

The requirements for introducing the technology are the availability of the handset ecosystem, scalability of D2M technology, business availability &opportunities and spectrum. The adoption of this technology depends on smartphone price, enabling & disabling the services and ecosystem of the smartphones and devices.

However, the DOT says frameworks and protocols can be designed for disabling the services while the enabling services can be designed according to the smartphone that receives direct broadcast signals. The government intends to bring all digital TV content into mobile phones just like radio wherein the signals are received just by tapping on the option with all the control of broadcast in the hands of the government for any kind of user-centric information like alert messages, social services and control the content over a media network.

Benefits of Direct To Mobile Technology:

  • Data transmission cost is reduced
  • Network efficiency is increased
  • Resilience of data services  will be improved
  • A nationwide emergency alert system can be established
  • Fast browsing experience
  • Network traffic over SIM cards is reduced
  • Continuous data transfer without interruptions
  • Huge coverage across the nations with proper data transmission
Conclusion:

Countries like the USA, Brazil, Mexico and Canada are in the starting trials of testing this technology but India is ahead in the starting stage of trials later this year and can become the first nation to introduce this D2M technology if everything goes well and by support of all the manufacturing companies.

Previously companies have raised several concerns regarding the D2M technology and its implementation in smartphones but once it becomes a success then no company can say no to its implementation as the users tend to show much interest in this kind of technology.
