Parents who are giving birth to their children must know this new rule for Birth certificates, which was made mandatory by the central government last year. Parents of the newborn child should state their religion separately, which is also the same for the one who adopts. Birth Certificate Equals Aadhaar
Parliament sessions which were held last year have approved the registrations of birth and death amendment bill (2023). This new bill for registering births and deaths has been approved by both houses of parliament Lok Sabha on August 1st & Rajya Sabha on 7th of August. The government has approved the birth certificate as the official document for availing different services.
Where You Can Use Your Birth Certificate
From October 2023 birth certificates can be used as valid documents for
- Enrolment in Educational Institutions
- To obtain a Driving license.
- Compiling a voter list
- For New Aadhaar Card
- In Government Jobs
- Marriage Registration

Birth Certificate As Mandatory Document
While announcing the new law the Home Ministry stated that this new act will enable them to create a database of registered birth and death certificates which ensures an efficient and transparent way of delivering public services.
The central government declared that 1st October 2023 as the official date for the commencement of registration of the Birth and Death Amendment Act 2023. A national-level database will be set up to keep the records of birth and death registrations which will be utilized for issuing various documents like Aadhaar, passports, issuing ration cards, validating and registering property registrations, tracking of national population register (NPR), electoral rolls, etc.,
Why Religion Was Excluded From Birth Certificates?
As the birth document is used for official purposes from now on, the central government decided to exclude religion from birth certificates. This can provide transparency over the government schemes since many fake documents have been issued for various purposes nowadays.
The parents need to provide the religion separately as provided by the latest birth report which excludes the religion of family declaration in birth certificates. Even the one who adopts children will also need to follow the same where the adopting parents need to provide their religion separate document.
