Akshardham Temple: A Marvel of Modern Hindu Architecture
The temple’s history in India is widespread due to its special attraction and unique stories. Many temples in India are built under the administration of kings which have a unique style of constructing temples while few temples have been built in memory of spiritual leaders. Due to the history of temples in India, everyone thinks that the largest temples are located in India but do you know that the 1st and 2nd largest Hindu temples are built outside India? We will explore the 2nd largest Hindu temple that has been inaugurated while the first largest Hindu temple is Angkor Wat located in Cambodia.
2ndlargest Hindu temple known as “The Akshardham Temple” was built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham organization. This temple is dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan who was a spiritual leader in the 19th century and his 5th successor Pramukh Swami Maharaj. This temple is located in Robbinsville Town, New Jersey, USA. Many features stood as special attractions to this temple that everyone must know
1. The temple was built across 183 acres with designs of Hindu sculptures and 10,000 statues along with carvings of 150 musical instruments and several dance forms
2. Different stones are used for their construction from different regions. “Limestone” brought from Bulgaria and Turkey, “Marbles” from Greece, Turkey and Italy, “Granite” from India and China and “Sandstone” from India which also represent different cultural streams.
3. The temple has” Brahma kund” in its surroundings which contains water from holy rivers in India and all states of the USA with a total of 400 rivers.
4. The temple was built over a span of 12 years (2011 – 2023) by volunteers from across the USA which constituted 12,500 members
5. The stone carvings were done in India while the assembling was done in the USA
6. The Ramayana and Mahabharata which are Indian itihasa were carved on stones to resemble Indian history
7. The philosophy founded by Bhagwan Swaminarayan The four pillars of Ekantik Dharma are righteousness, knowledge, detachment and devotion.
The construction of this temple was the divine wish of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, that people could come and visit irrespective of race and religion—this temple stands as tall as 191 feet height and is also the first largest Hindu temple in Western countries. The temple was grandly inaugurated on 0ct8th 2023 which is also a 90th birthday celebration of present leader mahant swami maharaj with all the dignitaries and Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan (BAPS) leader Mahant swami Maharaj with a huge presence of devotees in the event which was a huge success.
