Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the CAA (Citizen Amendment Act) will be implemented this year before the Lok Sabha elections.

All the applications will be made online, and the process will be entirely online to get Indian citizenship. The Citizenship Amendment rules 2024 will come under the CAA of 2019, and the persons will be eligible under the same.

Who Is Eligible For CAA

PM Narendra Modi announced the implementation of CAA on 11th March 2024, which was introduced in 2019. Many protests took place after the introduction of CAA in 2019, where minorities have been under the influence of losing their citizenship. However, Amit Shah stated that there are no provisions for removing the approved citizenship, and the CAA was also an act of the country. CAA will only apply to those who entered India before 31st December 2014.

This law allows Indian Citizenship for Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, and Parsi refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Protest And Support Against CAA

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamatha Benerji said she will not allow the implementation of CAA in the state.

On the other side, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has praised the implementation of CAA and thanked PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for helping the minorities in different countries.

The CAA was introduced in December 2019, and it took many years to implement the act with rules. Many states and politicians have expressed their concerns regarding the CAA Act, but the Modi government has been determined to implement this law. This act will allow people from countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh to obtain Indian citizenship where they have entered India due to religious issues.

To be eligible under this law, the people should be non-Muslims, which raised huge questions regarding the implementation. The Muslim community has many concerns regarding the implementation, which led to massive protests in 2019. This CAA also supports to avoid illegal migration from those countries

Citizen Amendment Act

CAA act protects people who sought shelter in India from the named countries due to religious persecution. At present, Indian citizenship is granted to one born in India or who has lived in India for at least 11 years. The latest provision allows the cancellation of Indian citizenship if anyone commits any violation.

As per claims, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have more Muslim populations. They are not considered minorities by the government, which led to protests from Muslims. The government responded to protests and said they would review the applications from other communities, one after another.

The government provided a web portal where the illegally migrated people should disclose the year they came to India. They will not even be asked for any documents to approve Indian citizenship.

1414 People Given Indian Citizenship

Around 1,414 people were given Indian citizenship, as per reports from 2021 to 2022. The non-Muslim minorities from the three named countries will get Indian citizenship through registration in nine states. Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Maharashtra are the nine states where illegal immigrants can receive Indian citizenship.

Conclusion

States like West Bengal and Kerala are opposing the law with several issues. More than 100 people lost their lives in protest against the CAA Act 2019. We have to wait and see how many non-Muslim illegal migrants are available in India and will all of them show interest in receiving Indian citizenship.
