A surprising announcement from The National Medical Commission(NMC) of India allows students to pursue a degree in medical courses like MBBS without a subject of biology or biotechnology in class 10+2. All the students of class 10+2 can now apply for the NEET – UG exam which is mandatory to take if they want to pursue a degree in medical courses. The eligibility criteria and benefits are detailed below

Medical Council of India Regulation:

In 1997 the Medical Council of India(MCI) regulated biology/ biotechnology as a mandatory subject in classes 11, and 12 along with practical sessions while subjects of physics, chemistry, and English are named in common if the students want to pursue a career in medical courses.

They also regulated take NEET – UG exam by only biology background students from full-time education without considering students from open schools and private education. Even if the education is full time the biology subject cannot not be an additional subject with other courses. These regulations have decreased the options for students choosing career opportunities in medical courses.

Eligibility To Take Neet Exam:

According to the Medical Course in Foreign Medical Institution Regulation and The Screening Test Regulations it is mandatory to take the NEET UG test even if students want to pursue medical courses through foreign country institutions which can be considered as an eligibility certificate.

This has been a major problem for students from non-biology backgrounds leading to the rejection of applications while applying for the NEET UG exam. The NMC has challenged these regulations in the Delhi High Court which has explained the impact on students who want to pursue a medical degree in foreign countries. They have framed this situation in court so that students from non biology/biotechnology stream could be eligible to take test of NEET UG.

NMC Decision:

After the discussions and court appeal the NMC decided to take biology/biotechnology as an additional subject with other courses from school/college that are recognized by the government so that they can take the Neet – UG exam which would be eligible for a mandatory certificate for pursuing a medical degree in foreign countries. This is eligible for students who have completed their 2-year course of 10+2 successfully and are taking biology/biotechnology as an additional subject. This notice shall apply to all the students who applied after the issuance of the notice along with the students who got rejected for the eligibility certificate previously.

Conclusion:

The National Medical Commission has provided a new way for students who want to pursue a career in medical courses.

Outside India, if students want to take up medical courses in India then biology/ biotechnology should be a mandatory subject as part of the curriculum. This would benefit only students aiming for graduation in foreign institutions. This will come into immediate effect from NEET 2024 and can avail biology as an additional subject after completing the 2 years of course successfully. After completing the NEET-UG exam the eligibility certificate issuance depends upon marks secured and guidelines permitted by NMC of India
