Introduction:
The Maharashtra government has approved more than 50% of reservations in the state for Marathas but is this possible? Maratha’s demand for reservation led to this announcement with many protests regarding the reservation in education and jobs. To know whether the high court has agreed to 50% reservation or not you can check out the “High Court order” but to better understand we suggest knowing the politics on a short note.

Protests:
The “Marathas” are a group of castes with peasants and landowners who are 33% of the Maharashtra population. The “Maratha reservation” has been a topic since 1981 in Maharashtra whenever a protest occurs regardless of the protest motive. The latest protest was held by “Manoj Jarange Patil” and this is not an official statement on who started this protest.
Reservation announcement:
The first unsuccessful protest took place under the leadership of Annasaheb Patil in Mumbai head of Mathadi Labour Union (MLU). However, the 2014 government led by ‘prithviraj chavan’( Congress-NCP govt) announced 16% reservation before the elections through a committee led by Narayan Ranebut “BJP Shiv Sena” government led by ‘Devendra Fadnavis’ came into power.
Unfulfilled Marathas reservation:
In 2016 incident where a 15year old girl was raped and murdered caused major protests in the state which indirectly led to revenge of Marathas over the government. In 2018 the government announced the reservation of a special quota–the “Socially and Educationally Backward Class Act”. But the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) came into power from 2019 -2022, where BJP explored the reservation issues. In 2022 the NCP(congress) and UBT(Shiv Sena) joined hands together to take the leadership under CM Eknath Shinde.
High court order:
Supreme Court overturns the high court judgement of reservation over the Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC) Act 2018 where 16 % is not justifiable and decreased it to 12% in education and 13% in jobs and stated more than 50% of the reservation should not be exceeded but can be preferred considering the data over availability, backwardness and without affecting the administration. This reservation was provided based on the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission (MSBCC) led by G.M. Gaikwad surveying about 45,000 families from two villages consisting of 50% Marathas.

Supreme Court judgement:
In May 2021 Supreme Court head Justice “Ashok Bhushan” cancelled the reservation quota which exceeded its limit set by Justice “Indra Sawhney” in the year 1992. After it supported the 10% of reservation the state government stated that until resolution the Economically weaker people can utilize the EWS quota. In April 2023 after the Supreme Court cancelled the plea the state government said it would file a counter-petition alongside forming a committee towards survey over backward community but until now the state government has not filed the counter-petition.
All party meeting announcement:
After the protests on September 1st2023the government held a party meeting in Mumbai on November 1st2023, finally, everyone in the meeting agreed that the Maratha community to get reservations which should be according to the law and without incurring injustice to other communities this announcement led to new hopes in Marathas for reservations but how much per cent of reservations will they get is still unknown and a question for many.
