Article Highlights
55% Discount on Train Ticket Prices:
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav reached Ahmedabad to review the progress on the ongoing bullet train project which will be starting its run in 2026. Recently the government completed the land acquisition for the project which will be running between MUMBAI – AHMEDABAD.
During the visit, the railway minister responded by restoring the fair prices of pre-COVID time which has been giving a concession of 50% on ticket prices. The minister stated that the Indian railways are already giving a concession of 55% currently which is higher than pre-COVID time for every passenger who is travelling by train. However, he has not responded directly to restore the fair prices of concession to senior citizens and media persons who were been receiving the concession before COVID.
Parliament On Ticket Prices:
The railways were offering a concession of 50% to senior citizens and government-accredited media persons till March 2020 on overall ticket prices.
Due to covid lockdown, the railway operations have been shut down and resumed operations in June 2022 upon which the concession has not been restored. Regarding this, the issue has been raised in LOK SABHA and RAJYA SABHA in restoring the concessions to senior citizens and media persons but the minister stood on his answer of giving 55% concession to every passenger.
The minister said the concessions have been divided into four categories upon which the passengers can avail the concession accordingly and showed the detailed numbers in concessions of ticket prices along with categories and concession amount.
Further explaining the concession issue the minister said the railway is already giving a concession of 53% on ticket prices for every passenger which cannot be increased anymore.
2,242 Crores Generated From Senior Citizens:
Earlier the railways responded to the RTI (RIGHT TO IN FORMATION) application which was filed by Chandra Shekar Gaur from Madhya Pradesh to know the revenue generated from ticket prices of only senior citizens. In the response, it is provided that 2,242 Crores has been generated from nearly 15 crore senior citizens in the financial year 2022 – 2023 which is a huge number when compared with railway giving concession to senior citizens.
The reporters have been questioning the top officials by the reference to RTI response on how that much revenue would be generated if the railways were given a concession of 53% to senior citizens
This has been the most demanding question from press reporters to answer by the top officials of Indian railways after the COVID.
